The Inspiration
“The wildlife depicted in the artwork are 4 of the most iconic species who reside at The Belize Zoo, including the Keel-billed Toucan (Belize’s National Bird); the Harpy Eagle (the largest raptor in the Americas); the Central American Tapir (Belize’s National Animal); and the Jaguar (the largest wildcat in the Americas). The sign they surround, stating that “We live in the beautiful world” is the most popular sign on the Belize Zoo grounds, photographed by thousands of visitors. Like most our signs, it is hand painted, and done in the original handwriting style of our Founder, Sharon Matola.”
